I remember him coming home with is face and hands red swollen and blistered ! As a result the only job available was in the stores . Of course the pay for a store man was considerably lower so my dad went on permanent night shift to ensure a reasonable income . His name was Charles ( Paddy) Simpson . Gearbox assy at Canley - i can remember me asking how many a day and I'm sure it was always around 230. One of his mates was Jack Allen a white haired Irishman - Dad had one of the early 948cc Heralds in 1959 in Coffee and White reg YHP 31 from Newsomes at Styvechale complete with Dunlop Gold Seal tyres and very soon somehow a Spitfire twin carb head was acquired to pep it up a bit but they werent quick. Remember people would stand and be amazed at 25ft turning circle which virtually rolled the front tyres off the rims.
